Ever wonder why you don't hear many songs about former US Presidents? Yeah, me neither, but a friend of mine is working to remedy that fact. Every year, on President's Day, he writes a new song about a former Commander-in-chief. Why? Great question. I will be sure to ask him. While we wait for a reply, however, here are a couple tracks for you to mull over. They are actually two different versions of the same song. Give 'em a listen and let me know which you prefer.
The "Green" philosophy is often misunderstood and aligned with
living like a hippy. As most of you are well aware, I am not a fan of
hippies or their lifestyle. Not that there is anything wrong with what
they do, it's just not the life for me. The whole point of being Green
isn't to be able to compost everything back to mama earth, ti would be
nice, but simply isn't a realistic goal. The idea is to shop smart.
Instead of buying crap that is just that, crap, buy something that is
made of quality materials that will stick around for a few years. When
you go to buy a cell phone, buy a good quality phone that you can hold
on to for a few years at a minimum. If it also happens to be that that
phone was made of 50% post-consumer waste plastics and meets the
European RoHS
manufacturing standards, than great! The same is true with everything.
Just try not to buy the cheap gimmicky crap from Wal-mart whenever you
can avoid it.
When you decide to get rid of something, do it smart. Donate it, recycle it, re-purpose it, give it away,
something, just don't toss it in the trash. I would never ask any of
you to start wearing hemp clothes, quit showering, or use hemp shampoo
on those rare occasions you will bathe. I wouldn't ask you to do any of
that because I think it is dumb... ok, overboard is a better word. I
might suggest ways to save/recycle/reuse water. Or maybe a way to make
your own shampoo and soap.
When I suggest that people visit the Cosmetics Database
to see how there personal hygiene products stack up in the toxicity
class it isn't with the intent to scare you. Rather I am hoping you
will be better equipped to buy stuff that will be safer and gentler on
your skin. Not because those other products aren't "green", but because
they may actually be doing you more harm than good.
If I can find a way to do something myself, without having to go to a
store or pay another bill, I am going to do so. For everything else,
however, I rely on the economy just like the rest of society. My goal
is to grow a kick-ass garden full of kick-ass fruits, vegetables, roots
and herbs. I than want to buy humanely raised and processed meats,
organic cheeses and dairy products than whip it all together to make
AWESOME tasting food that is actually good for you, to serve to my
friends and family. I want to live in a relatively simple house, that I
have designed that has systems in place to produce electricity, hot
water and even recycle used water to water plants and flush the toilet,
all in a sustainable and clean fashion.
Sure my goals for a green lifestyle may be different than most, but
that isn't the point. The point is being conscious of how you live and
what impact your choices may have on the planet, your body, your
neighbor or your wallet.
My idea of living green isn't crawling in a tent somewhere, eating grub
worms and pooping in a hole in the ground. On the flip side my idea
doesn't need a label like "Scuppie"
(I think we have to many labels as it is, do we really need another
one?). No, it's far easier than all of that. It's living simple, happy
and smart. I hope to share that idea with anyone who is willing to
listen.
